My analysis of Film Poster

Analysis of Film Posterd

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Media Technology

1) We used a number of social sites including FaceBook to collect comments for our teaser and ancillary products.

2) We used the Apple MacBook Pros, to create our teaser trailer and we used garageband that was found on these computers to contrive our music.

3) We used the camcorders to film scenes that we would eventually use in our teaser trailer.

4)We used the blogs to record our progress, to look and analyse other teaser trailers, we used it to look at film posters and magazine covers. We also used our blogs to receive comments for our teaser and ancillary products.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

How does it use

1) we used a mid shot for our magazine cover featuring the main star of our film similar convention used in this Batman magazine.

2)Our poster didn't use any type of fade, neither did we use the same colours. The colours portrayed in law abiding poster are thriller based colours e.g murky blue. We used a dark yellow and black so in this case we challenged this convention.

3 The font used in the knowing film poster is quite striking, we should have used a distinguished font for our film, Most films have their own font. we didn't which was a shame.

4) This is a clip from nightmare on Elm street which shows a victim running away, portraying a sense of fear. This was shown in Sam's scene when he ran away from Usman showing a sense of fear and vulnerability.

5)We challenged this form of a teaser. Many blockbuster teaser trailers' do not feature any clips from the actual film e.g. Spiderman 3 and Dark Knight. Our teaser showed clips that will appear in our film.

6) The colours here are striking in this magazine cover, not many colours were used, similar to our own since we didn't want our magazine too look unattractive.

Final Magazine covers

28578564 Final Magazine Presentation[1]

Here we have came up with two final magazine covers, the first one is showing a mid-shot of Usman body alongside with picture giveaways and exclusive interviews. The next magazine cover shows a close up of Usman face with various competitions and interviews. My favourite magazine cover will be the first one; I say this becuase there is just 'more' to observe on the cover, enticing the customers to buy the magazine. But the audience feedback would be the deciding factor for our final magazine cover. We will be recieving comments for our magazine covers on Facebook and Hotmail.

Audience Feedback

On our YouTube account we have enabled people to leave comments, so far we have receive positive comments. From youngerlife: '' like this man keep it up. God bless.'' this is only one of a few of the positive comments we have received for our youtube video. We also shared the teaser trailer on the social network Facebook, where we have received a lot of constructive comments. From one person: " nyc work... love the way u edited the film.." from here we see that our teaser trailer is really good but we are yet waiting to receive comments on how to improve, it's always best to get the balance right between positive and negative comments, we would rather receive more positive comments but we know that our teaser trailer is not perfect so we need comments highlighting this i.e. constructive criticism

Music for our teaser

A few weeks ago, we had our first lesson to create the music for our teaser trailer. The music editing software on the AppleMac Pro is called 'Garageband.' Similar to the editing of our teaser we were a bit baffled at this 'garageband' software because we had never used this programme before. Our teacher showed us an instructional video from the Internet. We were then able to grasp this new software, we started to look at different types of drums beats and Piano melodies which could be used for our teaser. We planned to use the piano for the beginning of our teaser to portray mystery and vulnerability where the piano would play a slow melodious sound, then around 0:27, the drums were introduced to speed up the cuts and tempo, we also used shakers to maintain the tempo of the music. The construction of the teaser took about 5-7 lessons. We have now officially finished the making of our teaser and we are very proud of it. Below is a clip of the music we created for our teaser trailer.

Creation of Magazine covers

Nicholas is half way through the magazine covers, we have already seen one completed, which is the magazine cover where we see the close up of Usman face, but now Nicholas is creating the magazine cover which used the mid shot of Usman Body.

Update of film posters

Final g

We have started the creation of our film poster, at this point we have finished our final product but we are still creating the other four film posters. The final film poster is quite excellent, the colours chosen is brilliant, there is a use of low key lighting, really making Usman look dark and mysterious in the background, and Sam face portrays fear, which is a great combination.

A nightmare on Elm Street Film Poster

I have looked at this film poster; this really interested me due to the simplicity of the layout; the film poster shows what seen to be Freddy Krueger bending his head down smirking; this poster reveals just one image which is Freddy highlighting that Freddy is coming back for vengegance or to kill, we could tell by the dimly lit background which highlights darkness and danger, also we see a glimpse of the legendary razor sharp gloves signifying the theme Death.

Magazine cover research

Undergoing further research into magazine covers, I0 have came up with the following recomendations to ensure a sucessful movie magazine cover:

>The maximum of font to be used is 3 ; if too many fonts are used this would confuse readers and will make the magazine cover look unpresentable
>Backgrounds have a bleed affect; this is done so the image will blend in and the cover will not look very basic.
>There must be a main focal pont; this is done to get readers attention; the main focal point most times is a main character from the reviewed film.
>Date and price is clearly labelled; this is done so the magazine looks professional and up-to-date
>The front cover must not be biased in other words it must show clearly that the whole magazine is not only focused on the film that is appears on the front cover;

Phone Booth

This film poster really caught my eye as discussed before, hear we see te terror on the victims face, this is what needs to be portrayed on our poster.

StoryBoard (Final)

Final Storyboard

This was suppose to be the final idea for our teaser but there was a few changes which I will brief you on:

1) the first square shows me, Mark and Nicholas playing football, we decided not to include this in our teaser, this would make our teaser a bit tacky so the idea was withdrawn.

2) Different types of shots were changed, this was decided on the day of filming which made our teaser more professional

3) the order of clips was also changed, we did this to cleverly show Usman stalking his victims simultaneously, to give the impression to the audience that Usman was everywhere, also we had to alter the order because we were to make the middle of our sequence the fastest, therefore we decided to place all the 'action' clips in the middle of our sequence.

Please leave comment if you think that we should have continued with our storybord idea.

Our Trip to CLC

Draft Magazine & Poster

Our Trip to CLC

Recently we went to the CLC to learn how to use photshop, the skills we were going to acquire was going to help us with the creation of our magazines and front covers:

While at the CLC we learned:
>How to cut pictures out
>How to use different fonts
>How to fade pictures in and out
>How to create a glow on a piece of text
>Layering
>How to use the gradient tool
>How to put a glow on pictures

These valuable skills will enable us to create professional looking posters and magazine covers. The skills we learned was put into practise while at the CLC and we came up with the above idea for our magazine cover.

From our previous magazine cover research, we knew that our main focal point had to be on one person; we enlarged a picture of Usman face and started to play around with the tools we found on photoshop, we also started to create the poster as well. We may continue editing with the above magazine front cover and poster or we may come up with another idea. Only time will tell. Watch this space.

Poster ideas

Poster Ideas

Here are some drafts we drew up for our Poster ideas, these drawing are not great but we didn't want to waste time creating perfected pictures, as we had a lot to do in terms of creation of music, creation of magazine cover. Nicholas came up with an idea to ensure our film poster will be successfully, he recommended that we should make at the maximum three final film posters, so from this we can choose the best one, which I thought was a good idea.

Watch this Space to find out our three final posters.

Forth and final Editing session

Yesterday Me and Mark continued looking at potential poster ideas, we drew our ideas on paper, we came up with a number of ideas including:

> Usman face enlarged at the background, while me, Mark and Nicholas was playing football.

> an enlarged picture of a red footprint to reflect our title 'silent footsteps'

> Usman standing at the front while me, Mark and Nicholas are standing at the back

Nicholas briefed me on the latest with the editing on our teaser; the clips needed to be quicker, the names of directors and actors had to be added, a decision on the production name and make sure our teaser didn't go over a minute. We wanted to make the middle of the sequence the fastest section in our teaser, this required cutting the clips down to 1-1.5 seconds.

My colleagues were then able to insert the black screens allowing them to write the directors and actors name and their achievements within the black screens. The name of the director was Diego DeMoro, a Golden Globe winner for the film 'Around The Corner' Usman Sheikh an Academy Award winner, this was done as a selling point since this was going to be our first film, we wanted to entice people to watch these big stars at work.

We came up with the Production name EAGLE productions.

Finally, we have finished editing our teaser trailer which lasted for 56 seconds including the black screens. We were delighted so far on how the teaser trailer turned out but the next phase will be the creation of the music.

Film Poster research

For a couple of weeks now, I have undertaken thourough film Poster research; I have been looking at the internet which has become a valuable resource for my research, I looked at google images and IMP awards; this has given me confidence into making a compelling film poster:

To produce a successful film poster:

>It should have the main focus being emphasised on the image which stands out on the poster.

> include the following: actors, producers, directors, production companies, distribution companies, photgraphers, music producers, film name and release date (I must add that not all of the film posters I looked at had all the above e.g. sequels to Big Blockbuster films, this is because many people will know most of the information prior to the release, the selling point in this case would be the image)

> The theme of the poster reflects the title of the film

>The font should also reflect the theme of the film

> Many new films had quotations from critics or newspapers, this was done to entice skeptical or potential customer to go to the cinema to watch their films.

Poster ideas

Me and my colleagues are now thinking of potential poster ideas which is proving to be very productive, we came up with many ideas which could be our final product. The first part of our session included browsing on the Internet to look at other film posters, two posters caught my eye which was wolfman and phone booth; both film were thrillers similar to ours but one aspect I was very interested in was that both poster showed a person/persons looking terrified which we will indeed look to imitate for our own posters.

Editing Session 4

Editing is a very long process; we foresaw this from our previous editing tasks four our AS projects, therefore we made sure we had filmed additional clips to make our editing easier. Our last lesson we recieved valuable tips from our teacher; he said teaser trailers are under a minute long which is very true from the previous teaser we watched in class and in our spare time. Another valid point he made was that teaser trailers have shorter and faster clips.

We lacked faster/shorter clips and our teaser was over a minute. Our teaser trailer was over 1 minute 11 seconds including title pages e.g. adaptation, production company etc. We had to make our clips shorter, we reduced the time between the three black screens which contained our tagline so the audience won't forget it, we also removed some clips which proved not to be an easy task, sometimes there were disagreements. By doing this the teaser started slow then increase in pace which was our objective during the lesson, now our teaser was 59 seconds. We probably need one more session then we will be officially done with editing.

Thursday 28 January 2010

Editing session 3

We did some more editing today where we started to add our fades and black screens, we also shortened some more clips.

Like I said before Nicholas had a great idea of showing each victim being followed by Cain (Usman Shiekh). We started editing the scenes beginning with my scene which fades into Mark's scene. We also added three seperate black screens showing the tag line.

1st Black Screen - What would you do...
2nd Black Screen - ...if your past...
3rd Black Screen - ...came back to haunt you?

By the end of the lesson the teaser was 1 minute 11 seconds which was good. It was a very productive session as our teaser started to look like a real teaser, our work was greatly commended by our fellow class mates. One person said "hey I love the way you show Usman as a mysterious character who appears in each person's life (me, Nicholas and Mark). This makes Usman look creepy and shady"

Saturday 16 January 2010

Editing session 2

Recently we had our second session on editing, it was hard to get use to the new laptops but thanks to some youtube videos we later got the hang of the new software. We started the lesson by making folders and placing our clips inside of them. From that we were able to put our best clips together.

Once we put our clips together we found out that the duration of the teaser was too long over 1:30 which is not good as from research we had taken previously showed that teasers are meant to be under a minute. We started to delete unnecessary scenes which did cut our teaser to 1 minute 10 seconds excluding the black fades and black screens, adding these would add valuabe seconds to our teaser. Our aim was to make our teaser at least 42 seconds

My colleague Nicholas came up with a very good idea; that the teaser should show the killer following his victims simultaneously, this will portray fear and mystery into our teaser. We haven't finished editing so we may need another lesson to continue.
